Okmeydanı Sosyal Yardımlaşma ve Dayanışma Derneği is a community center serving the diverse community of Okmeydanı, Şişli. Their work includes integration programs for the displaced Syrian community. Istanbul&I sends volunteers every weekend to Okmeydanı to assist in homework and creative expression time.
What We Do
The mix of Syrian, Turkish, and Kurdish students get much-needed support for school work. In art hour, they have a chance to express themselves and their identities while having fun. Okmeydanı Derneği is beginning to establish a refugee women community kitchen for local families to support integration and foster entrepreneurship, and we are looking forward to being part of that endeavor.
What We Need
Volunteers who speak Turkish and Arabic are especially welcome, but we accept anyone with a keen interest in fostering a positive relationship with Syrian children from Arabic and Kurdish backgrounds. Those with a background in tutoring and artistic skills are also encouraged to join. If you have an idea to facilitate an art project for art hour, please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
We volunteer every Saturday in Okmeydanı. Homework time is from 12-2 and creative expression time is from 2-4.
