Okmeydani Community Center

Project Duration: 12 months

Okmeydanı Sosyal Yardımlaşma ve Dayanışma Derneği is a community center serving the diverse community of Okmeydanı, Şişli. Their work centers around integration programs for the displaced Syrian community, including programs for children and a refugee women’s kitchen. They seek to unite Syrian and Turkish communities in their community space.

Starting in October 2017, Istanbul&I sent volunteers every Saturday to Okmeydanı to assist in homework and creative expression time. Approximately 30 Syrian, Turkish, and Kurdish students got much-needed support for school work during this time. In our art hour, artistic Istanbul&I volunteers organized creative expression workshops on music, collage, and painting. The children had a chance to express themselves and their identities while having fun.
